If your PC is running slowly or you get error messages about low memory, you may need more memory. Or maybe you’re just curious about your PC’s specs? Read on to learn how to check memory on Windows 10.
(Please note that checking memory works differently on a Mac and is not covered in this tutorial).
A brief introduction to RAM
Random Access Memory (RAM) is an important and fast short-term memory that your computer uses to store data that is in use are. This short-term memory is used for all applications running on your computer, such as B. surfing or word processing. RAM is cleared when you turn off the computer. Memory is different from a hard disk drive or solid-state drive, which permanently stores files and applications.
How to check RAM memory in Windows 10
Checking memory on Windows 10 operating systems is easy. Use the following steps to determine how much memory you currently have installed.
Step 1: Click “Start”.
First, click on the “Start” menu located at the bottom left of your screen.
Step 2: Find “About your PC”.
Then type “About your PC” and press Enter when the correct result is displayed.
Step 3: Navigate to “Device Specifications”.
A window called “About” should appear. Using the navigation bar on the right side of the window, scroll down until you see a section titled “Device Specifications”.
Step 4: Find out how much RAM you have
Look for a line titled “Installed Memory”. Here you can find out how much RAM is currently installed in your PC.
If your computer is stuck and you want to know how your RAM is being used, you can always check “Windows Task Manager”.
How to Check RAM Usage in Windows Task Manager
Many modern computers come with 8GB of RAM pre-installed. Some higher end computers, including gaming computers, may come with 16GB RAM or more preinstalled. In general, the more memory your computer has, the better it can handle multitasking (running multiple programs at the same time and possibly switching between them).
But not everyone needs more RAM or has a computer that can handle more RAM. One way to check the RAM in Windows 10 and determine usage is the “Windows Task Manager”. Follow these steps to query Windows Task Manager about your memory usage:
Method 1- Ctrl, Shift, Esc
Press the following keys: Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Task Manager should appear
Click the Performance tab and check the Memory section.
Method 2 – ctrl, alt, del
Press the following keys: Ctrl + Alt + Del
Click on “Task Manager”.
Click the Performance tab and check the Memory section.
Method 3 – Start, Task Manager, Performance
Select the “Start” menu located at the bottom left of your screen.
Then type “Task Manager” and press Enter when the correct result is displayed.
Click the Performance tab and check the Memory section.
After using any of these three methods on Windows 10, you should see a graph showing the current performance and usage of your RAM. If the graph shows that RAM usage is over 70% and you’re only doing simple tasks or doing nothing at all, you may need additional RAM to prevent sluggish performance. However, sometimes high RAM usage shown in Task Manager can also be due to too many programs running in the background.
Once you’ve checked your memory usage, you can find out how much memory your computer uses.
Upgrade RAM
If you’ve checked both installed RAM and Task Manager and determined that you need more RAM, finding compatible RAM for your system is a relatively simple process. Regardless of whether you want to upgrade the memory of a laptop or a desktop, there will be an option available for you.
The Crucial System Scanner is an easy-to-use tool that looks in your BIOS for information about your entire PC system and then searches Crucial.com for compatible memory upgrades. The following video explains more about the tool and how it works
