Windows reported that your device’s hardware has changed.

0xC004F211

A Windows license is associated with your device hardware. If you make major hardware changes, such as replacing the motherboard, Windows will no longer be able to find a license that matches your device when you restart it. If Windows was pre-installed on the device and you made a change such as replacing the motherboard, you need a new license.

To purchase a new Windows license, select the Start button > Settings > Update and Security > Activation, then select Go to Microsoft Store.
Open Activation Settings

If you have a Windows Product Key that you used on your device before the hardware change, enter it by selecting Start > Settings > Update and Security > Activation and then selecting Change Product Key.

Additionally, Microsoft provides an exception path to transfer a Windows license after a hardware change. You must be signed in to the same Microsoft account as before performing the hardware change and use the exception path.

To access the exception path, select Start > Settings > Update and Security > Activation, then select Fix problems. If the troubleshooter cannot fix the problem, you will see a link to reactivate after a hardware change. Select it to follow this path. For more information, see Reactivating Windows after a hardware configuration change.

The product key used on this device does not work with this edition of Windows. Contact the store or company that sold you Windows, enter a different product key, or go to the Store to purchase a genuine version of Windows.

When you reinstall Windows 10 using a digital license, you are prompted to choose which edition to install. If you choose an edition other than the one you are licensed for, you may see the following error.

If you think you installed the wrong edition, select Start > Settings > Update and Security > Activation, then select Fix problems. If the utility detects a valid Windows 10 digital license for an edition that is not currently installed, it notifies you and tells you how to install the correct edition.
Open Activation Settings

Warning: “Your Windows license will expire soon”

This can happen if you installed a volume license client. Windows 10 Pro Volume Licensing customers are used by large organizations that deploy Windows 10 on hundreds or thousands of computers.

In this case, activation is usually handled by your organization, and you should contact your system administrator for assistance. For more information, see Troubleshooting Windows License Expiration.

  • You entered a product key that cannot be used to activate Windows. Enter another product key or purchase a new one.

  • You upgraded to Windows 10 but the activation servers were busy. If you upgrade from an activated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, your copy of Windows 10 will be activated automatically. You can also wait a few moments and then select Enable. If your activation issues persist, contact Customer Support.

  • You upgraded to Windows 10 using the Free Tier, but Windows 10 is not activated after a reinstall. Your copy of Windows 10 should activate automatically if you haven’t made any significant hardware changes to your device (for example, replacing the motherboard). If your activation issues persist, contact Customer Support.

0xC004C003

You may encounter this error because the Windows 10 product key you entered is invalid. Product keys are unique, assigned to a specific user for installation on a single device. If a key has been used (or attempted to be used) on multiple devices, it is marked as invalid. To activate Windows, you must provide another Windows key specific to your device.

If you purchased a device from a Windows 10 reseller and the key was expected, contact the reseller. If you purchased a device from a Windows 10 reseller and you believe your key is valid, contact the reseller. If your device was purchased with Windows 10 pre-installed and you received this activation error the first time you turned on your device, contact the device manufacturer.

If your experience with your device is different from those listed above, try the following:

  • Run the Windows 10 Troubleshooter: Successively select the Start button > Settings > Update and Security > Activation, then select Troubleshoot.
    Open Activation Settings

  • Make sure you have a hard copy of your 25-character Windows Product Key to enter to activate Windows 10.

  • If your device was recently repaired by an independent repair shop, contact them to see if the repairs require a new Windows 10 license.

  • If the device is new and has never been activated, contact the manufacturer.
