A corrupted keyboard driver can render your keyboard unusable, causing you to have trouble using mouse-only operations.

< p>Windows, however, offers some quick fixes that you can use through Device Manager, but you must first check a few things about your keyboard.

To fix the corrupted keyboard driver issue, here are some preliminary checks and quick fixes, as well as solutions you can use later.

SOLVED: Corrupt keyboard driver issues

1. Examine your keyboard to make sure it’s not physically damaged

Keyboard drivers (and other drivers in general) can cause problems, and sometimes the simplest of things can also cause such malfunctions. If, for example, liquid was spilled on the keyboard, you may need to replace it completely. Another thing to examine is your keyboard cord to make sure no wires have been exposed. If yours is a wireless keyboard, change the batteries to see if the corrupted keyboard driver issue is gone.

2. Check the keyboard connection

Before troubleshooting the problem to find solutions for the corrupted keyboard driver, check that your keyboard is properly connected. If not, the driver probably did not load. Follow the keyboard cable and make sure it is connected to the correct port. USB keyboards should be connected to your PC’s USB ports, while round PS/2 port keyboards should be connected to the corresponding port labeled with a keyboard icon or image. For wireless keyboards, check the manufacturer’s instructions for how to connect them.

3. Verify Windows driver installation

• Right Click Start
• Select Device Manager
• Expand Category Keyboards
• Right click on the keyboard you want to repair
• Select Uninstall

• Let the computer restart after which Windows will reinstall the keyboard driver

5. Use proprietary software

Some keyboards require proprietary Windows-based drivers to access all of the keyboard’s advanced features, such as hotkeys and media controls. These drivers come with the CD that accompanies your keyboard, but you can also get them from the manufacturer’s official website. Once the driver installer is in place, run it following the instructions on the manufacturer’s website.

6. Use Device Manager to update existing drivers.

Often the keyboard driver, if incorrect or outdated, can be corrupted. You can update it to the next version and see if that fixes the problem.

• Right click Start
• Select Device Manager

• Expand Category Keyboards

• Right-click on the keyboard you want to repair
• Select Update Driver Software and follow the instructions.

• A new window will appear asking “How do you want to search for driver software?”
• Select “Search automatically the updated driver“. Windows will search online for an update for your keyboard. If applicable, the update will be applied to your keyboard.

• Restart to complete the change.

• Open the on-screen keyboard to type some commands below
• Click Start
• Using the on-screen keyboard, type This PC and wait for it to appear in the list.
• Right-click on This PC
• Select Properties
• In the System window, click the Device Manager link.
• Find keyboards and click to expand the list
• Look for a standard PS/2 keyboard: an exclamation mark next to it may indicate an error.
• Left double-click Standard PS/2 Keyboard

• A window with the title Standard PS/2 Keyboard Properties will appear.
• Under the General tab, you will see that there is a problem with the keyboard. Normal operation says “device is working properly”.
• Remove keyboard
• Detect it again in Device Manager
• Click on the Keyboards category to expand the list.
• Left-click on standard PS/2 keyboard to highlight it
• Press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete it. Windows will warn you that “You are about to remove the device from the system”
• Click OK. If it asks if you want to remove the driver, click Yes.
• Go to Device Manager window, top
• Click action
• Select Scan for hardware changes.
• Your keyboard will detect itself again. Try updating it using Device Manager.
• Right Click Start
• Select Device Manager
• Expand Category Keyboards
• Right click on the keyboard you want to repair
• Select Update driver software and follow the instructions.
• A new window will appear asking ” How do you search for driver software?”
• Select “Search automatically for updated driver software”. Windows will search online for an update for your keyboard. If applicable, the update will be applied to your keyboard.
• Restart to complete the change.
• If Windows says “The best driver software for your device is already installed to the next step.
• Open an administrative command prompt by typing CMD in the search bar.
• Right-click Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”.
• Use your mouse to highlight the text below: value of rem was prior to 3

• Right click on the highlighted text above
• Select ‘Copy’ from the dialog menu.
• Right click in the middle of the prompt window to command
• Select Paste
• The text you copied should appear on the command line.
• Restart your computer to force the keyboard to detect itself again
• Check if the keyboard is working now

If the keyboard is not working, a simple registry edit may fix the problem. To do this:

• Right click Start
• Select Run
• Type regedit and press Enter

• Click Edit
• Click Find
• Type kbdclass and press Enter
• Look for a key with the name UpperFilters and Data of
• If you find the key, double-click it
• Eidt the text to include only kbdclass and press OK
• Keep searching until you have found and edited all UpperFilters keys. All of these should have a data file that only includes kbdclass
• Close the Registry Editor
• Right Click Start
• Select Device Manager
• Click Keyboards to expand the list.
• Find your keyboard and uninstall it
• Restart your computer and see if your keyboard works after that.
