How can something that worked seamlessly in Windows 7 break so badly in Windows 10? Well, the answer to this question is known only to Windows 10 developers. They somehow managed to make scaling difficult for users using high-resolution monitors, as the DPI discrepancy makes the interface blurry or pixelated, with everything looking larger than it should be. This of course affects the desktop and explorer icons, which are both blurry and pixelated.

We have a few fixes for this problem, but hope not big. This is a common problem and despite all the supposed fixes provided by Microsoft, it’s still bothering some users.

How to fix blurry and pixelated icons on PC?

  1. Check the resolution
  2. Install the correct GPU drivers
  3. < strong>Update Windows
  4. Reduce DPI size
  5. Change refresh rate
  6. Change the visual effects settings to Best Appearance
  7. Roll back the update
  8. Restart your PC

Solution 1 – Check the resolution

Start troubleshooting by making sure your native resolution is set. If everything is fine with the GPU drivers, you should be able to see your monitor’s native resolution in the display settings. Of course, this will only get you so far that the DPI scaling issue for high-resolution monitors in Windows 10 is a known atrocity.

If you’re not sure how to set your native resolution in Windows 10 , do the following:

  1. Right-click on the desktop and open Display Settings .
  2. Select under Resolution the recommended resolution from .

  3. Apply the changes and restart your PC.

You can also right-click on the desktop, select View and set the icons to small.

Solution 2 – Install the correct GPU drivers

Faulty drivers are now the most common reason for the overall blurry and pixelated Windows user interface. The ones that Windows 10 provides automatically after system installation sometimes work and sometimes don’t. Typically, a generic GPU driver will not allow the GPU to properly configure the DPI for larger monitors. Not to talk about the inability to set your native resolution without proper GPU drivers.

For this reason, we recommend that you navigate to the OEM’s official support site and download the latest driver version for your PC. If you are not sure which GPU you are using, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on Start and open Device Manager .
  2. Expand the Display adapters section.

  3. Right click on your graphics processor and open Properties.
  4. Select the Details tab , and select Hardware ID from the Properties drop-down menu.
  5. Copy and paste the first value into a web browser.

After looking at the GPU details, navigate to one of these 3 websites and search for:

  • NVidia
  • AMD / ATI
  • Intel

If you don’t want to download the drivers manually, you can always use a third-party tool to download them automatically. The great benefit of using such tolls is that it finds the versions that are actually compatible and working on your system. This way you can’t damage your PC by downloading and installing the wrong driver versions.

TweakBit Driver Updater is a simple tool that allows you to update all drivers automatically with a single click be able. If you don’t want to search and download the drivers manually, try this tool.

Note: Some features of this tool may not be free

Solution 3 – Update Windows

Critical updates for Windows 10 updates tend to disrupt even the most important system functions. Many users reported blurry and pixelated icons after the major update hit the deck. This applies to almost every major update since the Anniversary Update. So it’s safe to say that Microsoft doesn’t closely review their major builds before releasing them. In their defense, tweaking the system to thousands of different configurations is no easy task.

In any case, the practice to date has been to deploy fixes after user feedback makes them realize something is broken is. For this reason, we recommend that you update your system as soon as possible. Hope this solves your problem.

How to update Windows 10:

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings .
  2. Select Update & Security .
  3. Under Windows Update, click Check for updates .

Solution 4 – Lower the DPI size

If you happen to have the higher DPI settings set, we recommend changing the setting reduced to 100% (96 DPI). This is the recommended value. Of course, this is a serious problem for users of large, high-resolution monitors, since everything on the user interface will be tiny and barely visible.

However, if you are using a standard-sized monitor, there is a chance that the problem is caused by pixelated and blurry desktop icons will be fixed.

You need to do the following:

  1. Right-click on the desktop and open Display settings .
  2. Under Scale and layout, select 100% .

  3. Now click on the advanced scaling settings .
  4. Check the ” Let Windows try to load apps fix them so they aren’t blurry“.

Solution 5 – Change the refresh rate of the monitor

Some users have been able to fix the problem by changing the refresh rate of a monitor. This option shouldn’t affect dot-per-pixel scaling, but it’s worth a try. If you’re still having pixelated and blurry icons, try different refresh rate values. Maybe this will solve the problem.

To change the monitor refresh rate in a few simple steps:

  1. Right click on the desktop , and go to Display Settings.
  2. Open the Advanced Display Settings

  3. Select Related settings and open Display adapter properties
  4. Go to the Monitor tab and select an alternative one Refresh rate from Screen refresh rate

Solution 6 – Change the Visual Effects settings to Best Appearance

Another Workable solution suggested by one of the affected users is to set the Best Appearance setting. This option is located in the advanced system settings and concerns the optimization of the system graphics.

For example, you can optimize your PC to work better without the visual effects of the user interface, or in this case choose the setting for the full visual effects. Note that this may affect system performance, especially if you are using a low-spec PC.

To change visual effects:

  1. In the Windows search bar, type Expand and openShow advanced system settings from the list of results.
  2. In the Performance section, click Settings .

  3. Toggle ” Customize ” and confirm the changes.

Solution 7 – Roll back the update

Update has already been mentioned as a possible solution. However, if you are plagued by this problem for a long time and are unable to solve this problem, you should roll back the update. Major updates, like the last October update, usually cause a lot of problems after the first release.

Fortunately, there is a way to roll back your system to the previous version and hopefully fix the error at hand. Here’s how:

  1. Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  2. Select the section Update & Security .
  3. In the left pane, select Recovery.
  4. Under the Revert to previous version of option, click Windows 10 ” on Getting Started.

Solution 8 – Reset your PC

If none of the previous steps worked for you, we recommend a clean install or die Possibility to use the built-in recovery option. Reinstalling is still a better choice, but it can be time-consuming and requires you to back up all your data from the system partition.

You’ll also need to get your hands on the Media Creation Tool and create a bootable drive. On the other hand, the Reset this PC recovery option lets you start fresh while leaving everything essential untouched.

How to factory reset your PC:

  1. Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  2. Select the Update & Security .
  3. In the left pane, select Recovery.
  4. Under the option, click Reset this PC ” to ” Getting Started “.

If that doesn’t help, here’s how to perform a clean install of Windows 10. And with that word we can call it a wrap. If you have any questions, suggestions or alternative solutions, please feel free to let us know in the comments section.
