Recently, you noticed that every time you search with Chrome , you are directed to Yahoo , instead of your favorite search engine. You have tried to find a solution to the problem but, unfortunately, all your attempts have been in vain… at least until now, that you have come across this guide of mine. In today’s tutorial, I will show you how to remove Yahoo from Chrome to change the default search engine and the browser home page.
I will then explain how to proceed on computers with Windows operating systems, on Mac and mobile devices, then on smartphones and tablets, equipped with Android and iOS . Also, in the unfortunate event that you are infected with a virus or malware, I will give you some useful tips to clean your computer of these types of threats.
How do you say? Can’t wait to start? So let’s not waste any more time: sit comfortably, pay attention to the advice I have prepared for you in this guide of mine and try to put them into practice. I am sure that, if you follow my suggestions to the letter, you will be able to remove all references to Yahoo from Google Chrome on all your devices. Remove Yahoo as a search engine in Chrome
To search the web using Google Chrome , simply type the query (i.e. the terms to search for) within the address bar , located at the top. If, by doing this, you see the results on Yahoo and not on your favorite search engine, such as Google, it is possible that some browser parameters have been changed. In the next few lines, therefore, I will explain how to remove Yahoo from Chrome search engines and restore the program’s default search engine.
Computer
If you want to remove Yahoo as a search engine from Google Chrome for Windows , you can proceed as follows: start Google Chrome first and, on the main browser screen, click on the icon with the ⋮ symbol (top right). In the context menu, select the Settings item and, in the new screen that opened, locate the Search engine section (located in the list on the left).
Once this is done, you should read Yahoo in correspondence with the Search engine used in the address bar . Then click on the Yahoo item to open a drop-down menu, from which you can select a different search engine, such as Google . By doing so, you will have successfully set up a different search engine. Are you wondering how to remove Yahoo from Chrome Mac ? The procedure to follow, in this case, is completely identical to the one just described.
If, on the other hand, you want to completely remove Yahoo from the search engines in Chrome , I’m sorry to be informed that this operation cannot be performed. As it is one of the browser’s default search engines, it cannot, at least for the moment, be completely eliminated. The only thing you can do, therefore, is to make a different search engine the default.
Smartphones and tablets
If you use Google Chrome on smartphones and tablets, you can remove Yahoo Search as your default search engine very easily both on Android devices is on iOS .
To proceed, on Android smartphones and tablets, start Google Chrome and tap the icon with the ⋮ symbol at the top right. In the context menu you see, tap on the items Settings & gt; Search engine . In the list that is shown to you, then tap on any search engine , such as Google , in order to select it and immediately use it instead of Yahoo. < / p>
As far as iPhone is concerned, the procedure is practically the same as described a few lines above. The only difference is in the main menu icon, represented by three horizontal dots located at the bottom right. Very simple, isn’t it?
Remove Yahoo as Chrome start page
Starting Google Chrome, as start page you are shown the Yahoo homepage instead of the classic browser home screen? If you want to remove it, you can act directly from the program settings. In the next lines I will explain how to proceed on both computer and mobile devices.
Computer
On a computer, it is possible to modify both the home page (the one that appears by clicking on the Home button, in the shape of a house next to the URL bar), and the opening page of a new tab in Chrome. But let’s go in order.
To change the Chrome home page, start the browser and click on the icon with the ⋮ symbol at the top right. In the context menu, select the Settings item to access the program configuration panel. To change the page set as home, locate the Appearance section and change the Yahoo URL that you find in the text box, under the heading New Tab Page < / strong>. Then type any website you would like to reach by pressing the Home key, such as www.google.it .
If, on the other hand, you want to change the home page that is shown to you every time you open a new tab, scroll through the items in the Settings panel of Google Chrome, until you find the On startup section . Under Open a specific page or set of pages , locate the wording Yahoo and click on the icon with the ⋮ symbol that you find at flank. In the context menu, click on the Remove option, to delete the Yahoo reference, or press Edit , to change the URL to a different one, such as www.google.it .
Smartphones and tablets
To change the Google Chrome home page, also known as Home , in the mobile environment, you can only act on Android devices. On iOS , at least for the moment, there is no useful setting to change this aspect.
To do this, start the Google Chrome app and tap the icon with the ⋮ symbol at the top right. In the context menu, tap on the items Settings & gt; Home page .
In the screen shown to you, press the words Open this page and change the Yahoo URL with one you prefer, such as www.google.it , or put the check mark next to the Chrome start page item.
Remove automatic redirects to Yahoo
If, despite the tips I gave you in the previous chapters, you still don’t know how to remove Yahoo from Chrome because it continues to persist, it is likely that you are infected with a malware which acts on the browser settings to make it use Yahoo instead of the program’s homepage and default search engine. In this case, I advise you to follow the suggestions that I will indicate in the next paragraphs to try to solve this problem.
Run an anti-malware scan
The first thing you can do is to try to use anti-malware software to clean the computer of the infection . The software I recommend you to use is AdwCleaner , a free tool for computers running Windows , which does not require any installation. If you’re interested in downloading it, just navigate to its official website and click the Free Download button.
After downloading the .exe file, double-click on it and, in the Windows User Account Control window, click on the Yes
If no threats are found, you can try to use the Malwarebytes antimalware software, available for free (after a 14-day free trial of the Premium version) at Windows or macOS . You can also buy a paid version (but, in this case, you don’t need it) starting from 39.99 euros / year which enables automatic updates and real-time protection.
If you have a Windows computer, go to the link I gave you and click on the Free Download button, to get the .exe file required to install Malwarebytes. Then double-click on it and, in the opened panel, press the Yes button and then the Install button. Then select the use you want to make of it ( Protect me or my family or Protect my organization ), choose whether to add MalwereBytes Browser Guard for browser protection and wait for the program to be installed. Once done, press the Completed button and, in the Malwarebytes main screen, press the Start now button twice in a row, to start using the program, and finally press on the Scan button.
On macOS , on the other hand, click on the Free Download button that you find on the Web page I have provided, so as to download the .pkg file needed to install the program. When the download is complete, double-click on it and, in the screen that is shown to you, press the Continue button three times in a row. Then press the Agree and Install buttons, then type the macOS password . Once the procedure is complete, press the Close key and start Malwarebytes and, on its main screen, choose the use you want to make of it from the options offered and start the free trial. Now to scan and remove the threats on your computer, press the Scan button.

Remove unwanted extensions from Google Chrome
You can also consider checking if there are any of extensions in Google Chrome that have malicious code and that interfere with the correct functioning of the browser.
To do this, you can disable the extension or completely remove it from Google Chrome. To do this, start the program and click on the icon with the ⋮ symbol at the top right. In the context menu that is shown to you, select the items Other tools & gt; Extensions , to reach the section relating to the management of browser extensions.
In the screen that is shown to you, to disable an extension, move the lever that you find in its box from ON to OFF ; if you want to uninstall it, instead, simply press the Remove button twice in a row.
Uninstall unknown toolbar and software
Another useful tip is to remove any unknown software from your computer. If you have a Windows computer, click on the icon with a magnifying glass symbol at the bottom left of the taskbar. In the text box, type the terms “control panel” and click on the corresponding search result.
In the screen that is shown to you, click on Uninstall a program so that you can view the list of all software installed on your computer. Then locate those with names unknown to you or those that contain the term toolbar and, after selecting them, press the Uninstall button at the top. On macOS < / strong>, on the other hand, find the software installed in the Applications folder in the Finder . Just right-click on the malicious program and select Move to Trash . Reset Google Chrome
As a last resort, you can perform the reset of Google Chrome settings , useful for deleting of any cached file and all information saved in the browser.
To do this, start Google Chrome and click on the icon with the symbol ⋮ that you find at the top right. In the context menu, select the Settings item and click on Advanced . Now scroll down the list until you reach the Reset and cleanup section ( Reset on macOS ). Then click on the item Restore the original default settings and then press on Reset .
On Google Chrome for Windows, in the aforementioned section there is also a another button, named Clean your computer . This feature allows you to scan your computer to identify and remove malicious software. Then click on this wording, then click on the Find button and wait for the scan result.
