This tutorial explains what a JAR file is and how to open it on Windows, MAC and Linux using of JAR file openers and opens:

Surely you have come across JAR files while surfing the Internet and wondered what they actually are and what they can do. In this tutorial we are going to tell you everything about JAR files, what they are, what they do and how to open them.

You can use decompression if you want to view the files in the JAR file, and if you want to run them you need the Java Runtime Environment. There are also some tools for opening JAR files like File Viewer Plus, WinZip, 7-Zip, WinRAR, etc.

What is a JAR file?

JAR is short for Java Archive Files. As the name suggests, it is an archive file. An archive file is a single file that combines other files to save disk space, reduce the chance of errors, and more. They are very similar to ZIP files, the only difference being that they are used by the Java Runtime Environment.

The manifest in JAR files is their unique feature. A manifest is a special metafile that controls the behavior of JAR files and contains information about the files in the file, e.g. B. compiled Java code, also called CLASS files, security certificates, image files, audio files, etc.

The runtime environment can read and execute the JAR file in a single request. This can be a browser add-on, game, application theme or similar. It can be used for many purposes on both mobile and desktop. And since it contains thousands of files in a compressed format, you can easily move and share them.

How to open JAR files

If you want to view each file in a non-executable JAR file, you can do so using JAR file compatible compression/decompression software. Either WinRAR or 7-ZIP, either of these programs is a good choice. After installing WinRAR or 7-ZIP, run it, open the file and unzip the files inside.

Once extracted, you can click on the files to view them. Although most files are plain text files, you may need additional software to view some files.

If you want to use programs like 7-Zip or WinRAR as the default programs to open these files, right-click the file, select the “Open with” option, and then select the default program. Click the “Browse” button in the “Open With” window to open the “File Explorer” window. Then locate the .exe file for the software program that you want to use as the default program to open these files.

Java runtime environment (to run the file)

If you want to run the JAR file, you need the Java Runtime Environment. If you have the Java Runtime Environment, you just need to double click on the file name. This only works if the file is executable. If this is not the case, you can simply view the files.

If the file doesn’t run when you double-click it, it’s probably not an executable file. If your file was created with an archiver such as 7-ZIP or WinRAR, but you want to open it with Java, do the following:

Right click on the file.
Select “Open With”.
Go to Browse to open the File Explorer window.
Locate the Java.exe file on your hard drive, which is usually located in a subfolder of the Program Files (x86)\Java or Program Files\Java folder.
Once you find the file, select it and click Ok.
