You can turn off your WLAN if you don’t need it. We show how this works on the Speedport router, the Fritzbox, on the laptop using the FN key, in Windows, in Android, on the iPhone and iPad and with MacOS.
WLAN
When you don’t need your WiFi connection – for example at night when you sleep – you can disable it to save power and minimize radiation. Be it the Speedport router, the Fritzbox, in Windows or Android or on the Mac. Otherwise, all devices will continue to radiate and consume unnecessary energy.

On the Speedport router
On the Speedport router you can switch off the WLAN using the WLAN button. You press the WLAN lettering on the front. If you don’t know the speed ports, you might not even know that this is a button.

On older models you will find the WLAN button on the back:
On other models, the WiFi button is on the back.
On the Fritzbox
On the Fritzbox you also have a button at the top edge to deactivate the WLAN: It is called “WLAN (WPS) “.

In the Fritzbox settings you can still differentiate between the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and set automatic activation and deactivation:
- Opens the user interface of the Fritzbox or your router.
- Opens the menu item WLAN > Wireless network.
- Scroll down to the Wireless network heading.
- Remove the tick from both frequency bands 2.4 and 5 GHz.
- Then click on the Apply button below.

Switch off the WLAN connection automatically
You can also have the WLAN connection of your Fritzbox switched off automatically so that the connection is only active during the day or at certain times. To do this, switch to the WLAN > Timer. Then tick the “Use timer for the wireless network“.
- Select “Turn off wireless network daily” for a specific time range.
- Select “Turn off WiFi by schedule” if you want the WiFi to turn on or off at different times each day.
Here you can create a schedule for when the Fritzbox automatically switches off the WLAN.
Deactivate WLAN on the laptop using the FN key
On notebooks you will usually find a WLAN key on the keyboard:
- Press it FN key along with the WLAN key.
- Your WiFi connection should now be disabled.
- In the same way you can Reactivate WLAN.
With the WLAN button on notebooks you can quickly turn off the WiFi.
Alternatively, deactivate the WLAN in Windows yourself.
Switch off WLAN in Windows
- Opens the Device Manager .
- Search for your wireless adapter under the Network adapters category. This is usually labeled Wireless or WLAN.
Windows: You can disable the WLAN adapter in the device manager.
- Click on it with the right mouse button and select Disable – Caution: Do not uninstall!
- Confirm the message with Yes .
If you are not connected to the Internet via a cable, you can see that your WLAN connection is disabled by the red cross icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar.

Deactivate WLAN via CMD
Alternatively, you can also deactivate the WLAN via the command prompt:
- Open the command prompt with administrator rights.
- Type in the command:
netsh interface show interface - Search for your WiFi network in the list.
- Then type in the command:
netsh interface set interface YOUR-WLAN disabled
< strong>Note: Instead of “YOUR-WLAN” enter the name of your WLAN network.
CMD: You can switch off the WLAN via a command prompt.
- Windows has now deactivated the WLAN connection.
- With the command
netsh interface set interface YOUR WLAN enabledyou can activate it again.
Deactivate WLAN on Android smartphone
You can deactivate WLAN on your Android smartphone as follows:
- Wipe off top down to open Quick Settings.
- Now tap on the WLAN icon to disable the connection.
- You can now switch the switch to “Off” at the top >”.
< li>Alternatively, you can open the Settings and tap on the entry WLAN.

iPhone & iPad: Turn off Wi-Fi
On the iPhone or iPad, proceed as follows:
- Swipe up from the bottom.
- Tap on the WLAN symbol.
Here you deactivate the WLAN on the iPhone and iPad.
Alternatively, proceed as follows:
- Open the Settings.
- Tap on WLAN.
- Sets the WLAN switch to off.
Turn off wireless connection in macOS
- < li>Click on the WLAN symbol in the upper right corner.
- Now select the entry “Deactivate WLAN“.
