BOOT REPAIR ON WINDOWS 10

When starting Windows, it can happen for one reason or another that the system fails to start by displaying an error message concerning the BCD (Boot Configuration
Data) of Windows which contains the boot information.

If the latter is misconfigured or damaged, it will prevent Windows from starting.

The error message is usually accompanied by an error code like:

– 0xc000000f

– 0x0000225

– 0x0c0000034

– 0x0000098

– 0xc0000605

– 0xc0000428

-Etc….

In this case, the PC is stuck on this blue “Recovery” or “Recovery” page or it restarts in a loop on the automatic repair.

In this situation, this tutorial explains how to repair the Boot in order to try to recover the system and this in the case of a system in
Legacy or in UEFI.

I- BOOT IN RECOVERY ENVIRONMENT USING ONE OF THESE TWO METHODS:

First method:

– Start the PC.
– Wait until the rotating circle appears.
– Force shut down the PC with the power button.
– Repeat the above operations 3 times.

The PC should then boot into the recovery environment.

Second method:

Boot with a Windows 10 installation media or recovery key with the same edition and version of Windows 10 as installed and access the recovery environment (WINRE), in other words the options of recovery
advanced.

To do this, after having passed the first window “Installation of Windows” by having confirmed the language “French (France)” in the first two boxes and “French”
in the third, in the second window, click on
Repair the computer.

You then access the recovery environment.

To create Windows 10 installation media, use one of the three methods indicated in the paragraph:

Notes:

a- As far as possible, always favor the First method
because in this case the Settings (Change the behavior of Windows at startup) will be available, which can be very useful.

b- Whether using the First method or the
Second method, by accessing the recovery environment:

– In the Choose an option window, click on
Repair.

– In the Advanced Options window, the following options will then be available:

– System Restore.

– Uninstall updates.

– System image recovery.

– System reboot tool.

– Command Prompt.

– Change UEFI firmware settings.

– Parameters (if it is the First method).

Then click on the “Command Prompt” tile.

The command prompt window opens to:

X:\Windows\system32>

II- REPAIR THE LEGACY BOOT (BIOS/MBR):

After launching the command prompt under the recovery environment following one of the two methods in the paragraph
I
above, enter the word notepad and press the keyboard key
Enter.

Notepad will open and there in the menu
File, click on Open and

Explore the hard disk to locate the letter assigned under the recovery environment to the system reserved partition.

Even though this partition is hidden in Windows, no letter is assigned to it, under the recovery environment, a letter is assigned to it and this letter can even take the OS partition letter in Windows,
as in this example:

Where the letter assigned under the environment to the partition
system reserved is the letter C
while the partition letter
OS is the letter D and not the letter
C which is assigned to it under Windows and which is taken in this example by the partition
system reserved under recovery environment.

In this example also: The data partition having the letter
D under Windows, received the letter
Ein recovery environment.

Once the partition letter
system reserved spotted, run the following commands in order:

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

If the Access Denied message appears, ignore this command and continue.

attrib C:\Boot\BCD -h -r -s

(Replace C
by the correct letter of the partition
system reserved marked with notepad in your case.).

ren C:\boot\bcd bcd.old

(Replace C
by the correct letter of the partition
system reserved marked with notepad in your case.).

bootrec /rebuildbcd

The following message should appear:

Number of identified Windows installations:
1

[1]
D:\Windows

Add installation to boot list? Yes(Y)/No(N)/Any(T):

Then enter the letter O
and press the keyboard key
Entrance.

The message “The operation was successful” should appear. close then
the command prompt and click on “Turn off the PC” then
start.

(This, assuming the OS partition letter is the letter
D, otherwise the letter that corresponds to your case will be displayed).

Notes:

1- By running the command bootrec /rebuildbcd, if the following message is displayed:

Number of identified Windows installations:

Enter the following commands in order:

bcdedit /createstore bcd

bcdedit /import bcd

then:

bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

(Answer Yes).

Close the command prompt then Shut down the PC and start.

2- If the PC still does not start, try to completely rebuild the BCD:

Boot in recovery environment and access the command prompt then run the command:

bcdboot D:\Windows /l en-us /s
C: /f ALL

Where C always represents the letter assigned to the partition
system reserved and D the one assigned to the partition
OS.

3- In Windows, you can consult
if necessary (otherwise abstain) the contents of the reserved partition of the system.

For this:

a- Show hidden and protected operating system files and folders like this:

b- Assign a letter to the system reserved partition.

– Run the command Diskmgmt.msc
to access disk management.

– Right click on the partition
system reserved.

– Select: “Change drive letter and paths…”

– Click on “Add”.

– Check the box “Assign the following drive letter” and choose a letter.

– Click on OK.

– Close Disk Management window.

The contents of the scoresystem reserved normally looks like this:

Once viewing the contents of this partition for any reason, remove the drive letter of this partition to hide it again and hide hidden and protected files and folders from the operating system.< /p>

III- REPAIR THE UEFI BOOT (UEFI/GPT):

A- LOCATE THE LETTER ASSIGNED TO THE SHEET MUSIC
OSIN RECOVERY ENVIRONMENT.

After launching the command prompt under the recovery environment following one of the two methods in the paragraph
I
above, remember that the command prompt opens at:X:\Windows\system32>

Enter the word notepad and press the keyboard key
Enter.

The notepad will open and there, in the menu
File, click on Open and

Explore the hard drive to locate the letter assigned under the recovery environment to
OS partition (partition on which the operating system is installed).

We will take as an example
that case
or
under Windows, the system disk partitions in the format
GPTunder UEFIare:

We see here:

– The 450MB hidden partition which is the
recovery partition (WINRE).

– The 100 MB hidden partition in format
fat32 which is the system reserved partition (partition
EFI).

– The 249.45 GB C partition which is the
OS partition

– Partitions D and
E which are
data partitions.

In this example,
in recovery environment, these partitions became
:

– C: The 450 MB hidden partition which is the
recovery partition (WINRE).

– The 100MB hidden partition
in fat32 format which is the partition
system reserved (EFI partition).

This partition still has no drive letter.

– D:
The 249.45 GB partition which is the
OS partition.

– E and
F: which are
data partitions.

The whole, as in this image:

Conclusion:

We have therefore identified in this example the letter of the
OS partition which is the letter
D

B- STARTUP REPAIR (REBUILD BCD)–
Master Boot Record (MBR) – Boot sector and Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store.

Once the letter of the
OS partition
marked (in our example it is the letter
D), run the following commands in order:

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

If the Access Denied message appears, ignore this command and continue.

Bootrec /ScanOs

(Use in the case of Dual Boot if a system is missing from the boot menu).

And press the keyboard key ENTER.

Wait a few seconds while searching for Windows installations.

If any entries are not currently in the BCD store, they will be displayed.

The message: The operation was successful should be displayed.

bootrec /rebuildbcd

The following message should appear:

Number of identified Windows installations:
1

[1]
D:\Windows

Add installation to boot list? Yes(Y)/No(N)/Any(T):

(This, assuming the letter of the OS partition
is the letter D, otherwise the letter that corresponds to your case will be displayed).

Then enter the letter O
and press the keyboard key
Entrance.

The message “The operation was successful” should appear. close then
the command prompt and click on “Turn off the PC” then
start.

C- COMPLETE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BCD

If the repair of paragraph B
above does not work, try performing a full BCD rebuild.

To do this, access the command prompt again in the recovery environment which opens at:
X:\Windows\system32>

and run the following commands in order:

diskpart

list volume

And there, in the list of volumes, note the volume number assigned to the partition
system reserved(partition
EFI)
in fat32 format,
in the example we are dealing with, this is what is displayed with the command
list volume:

Then execute the following commands:

select volume 5

assign letter=v

A message will be displayed informing that diskpart has correctly assigned the drive letter or mount point.

– Close Command Prompt.

– Return to the command prompt again.

So we assigned the letter v
to our EFI boot partition.

Close Command Prompt.

– Return once again to the command prompt which will open again on:

X:\Windows\system32>

Enter command: cd /d
v:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\

And press the keyboard key ENTER to get:

v:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot>

Note:

In the command cd /d
v:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
the letter
d is fixed, not the letter
Dassigned to the
OS partitionunder the recovery environment in our example.

Stay on: v:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot>

– Run the command: bootrec /fixboot

If the Access Denied message appears, ignore this command and continue

– Enter command:
ren BCD BCD.old

And press the keyboard key ENTER

– Enter command:
bcdbootD:\Windows /l
fr-fr /s
v: /f ALL

And press the keyboard key ENTER

This message appears: The boot files were created successfully.

– Close the command prompt, click on Turn off the PC.

–Start

– Once in Windows, it is no longer necessary to hide the EFI boot partition which has been named
v because under new versions of Windows 10 it is automatically re-hidden at system startup.

Note:

In the bcdboot command
D:\Windows /l
fr-fr /s
v: /f ALL:

D represents the letter assigned to the
OS partitionunder the recovery environment in our example.

en-us refers to the installed language, in this case it is the language
French-France.

v represents the letter that was assigned on the command line to the partition
system reserved (partition
EFI)
in fat32 format.
